Start with a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits
One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that everyone should wear the exact same color.
Instead, aim for coordination rather than matching.
Soft earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully in Northern California landscapes, especially in outdoor environments like vineyards, coastal trails, farms, or redwood groves.

- warm neutrals
These colors complement Sonoma County’s natural scenery without overpowering the image.
Bright neon colors, heavy logos, or overly busy patterns can distract from the emotional connection in the photographs.
Dress for Movement and Comfort
The best family photographs usually happen in-between the poses:
- walking together
- holding hands
- children laughing
- cuddling close
- exploring nature
That means comfort matters.
Flowy dresses, textured layers, linen, cotton, soft knits, denim, boots, and relaxed silhouettes tend to photograph beautifully because they move naturally in the wind and environment.
Children especially photograph better when they feel physically comfortable.
If someone feels restricted, itchy, overheated, or self-conscious, it often shows in the images.
